How We Developed the By Athena Flegas and Donna Buckles Keeping yoga alive outside of the classroom is an ongoing dilemma for students and teachers. The solution appeared to us suddenly one fall afternoon during class. As usual, I was encouraging students to see their process of moving into and out of an asana as a flow around a circle. I suggested they learn the Sanskrit names for the poses, and wished aloud they could use flash cards to improve their Sanskrit awareness. The following week, Donna brought a card with her to class with a beautiful illustration of Warrior I. On the back, she depicted a circle showing stages of the asana with a Sanskrit description, just as I had described in class. What an artist! Our eyes met in a shared, splendid smile, both of us realizing in an instant how inspiring this concept! Since then, Donna and I have been working together, visualizing more applications for the cards all the while. We realized that students need a motivational tool to keep them interested in yoga, especially in the beginning. Over and over again I hear students say, "Who has time to read a book or come to class more than once a week?" Well, they do have time to practice at home using Body Mind Yoga Cards! One student even wanted a set of cards to take with her on a month-long travel adventure to keep her passion alive for her yoga practice until she came back to class. We hope these cards will feed your passion for yoga as it has ours. |
